Zoom H4N as USB Microphone

This next video shows how to connect the Zoom H4N to the computer with the USB cord supplied, and to set it up to record directly to your computer. It seems pretty straight-forward. I still don't know, however, how to get the sound files OFF the recorder, and into GarageBand for editing. Well, I'll keep searching - or else I'll just do it! Wish me luck!!

Shure Microphones

The next step in my podcasting adventure will be to select a microphone, for recording podcasts here at home, in my "studio". Now, why would I want another microphone, when the Zoom H4N has clearly a clean, quality sound to it? Well, I can't answer that question yet, which may be why I have not purchased a microphone! Anyway, here's a thorough comparison of the Shure SM57 vs the SM58 microphones. As a video, this one stands out. Not only does it show the difference in the sounds, but it also explains the differences, which are quite subtle, and also adds writing on the screen to summarize the more detailed information. I don't normally watch videos over 5 minutes long, but this 17-min expose was worth it.

Zoom H4N as Audio Interface

It's obvious that the Zoom H4N is a stand-alone, portable recorder. But it can also be used as an audio interface. What's the difference? Well, I'm not quite sure - will continue exploring this issue! Suffice it to say, it will take me many months to get a handle on this new piece of equipment, and the new field of podcasting. In the meanwhile, I'll continue to park some videos here that seem to be helpful. This next video is called "How to Use Your New Zoom H4N as a USB Audio Interface." All it really shows is how to connect the Zoom to the computer so you can record directly TO the computer - it doesn't explain the options or effects. BUT - that's all I need to know for now!

Server Speed Test

All of us are absolutely impacted by the speed of our servers. This has been made painfuly clear to me as we reassess our switch to Comcast. The latest speed test shows just what I suspected - our web server is barely crawling! And for that we pay big bucks? Maybe it's time to re-think this "bargain". Or switch our modem.
